  • First Football Game

Posted on November 10th, 2009 amy 5 comments

Have you ever felt lucky?  I felt loaded with luck by the end of my first NFL game.  I attended my first New York Giants football game when I was about ten years old.  I was very well prepared for the chilly December game.  My mother bundled me in scarves and gloves.  I was so excited to experience what my family talks about all the time.

Since I was a young girl,  the game of football was still extremely confusing.  I sat with my grandmother, mom, and sister. The men sat in the row in front of us, all in their lucky seats.  It was funny to watch my dad and grandfather talk so seriously about the game.  Although, there was more laughing and jumping then chatting.  The Giants one by a mile!  Everyone invited me to come again.  I was told by many I was a good luck charm to my favorite football team!

  • My Thoughts on Fall

Fall is like a fire.  Fires can be good or bad.  They can destroy a home, or add a glowing warmth.  Just as fall, in my mind, has good and bad aspects.  Fall is filled with beautiful colors, and cool, chilly weather.

Color is the obvious comparison between fall and fire.  When I think of fall, I think of color.  Orange pumpkins say fall.  Red leaves say fall.  Fire has a bright blend of reds, oranges, and yellows.  This color palette is also common to the trees of forests in autumn.  I love the colors of fall.  They are maybe my favorite part of this season.

The colors of fall may be warm, but the weather of fall is not.  I love warm weather and the beach.  I am very much a summer girl.  The first cool breezes of fall always come with the end of the summer.  As the chilly winds roll in, I seem to loose my interest in the frills of fall.  When school starts and jackets are needed, autumn is the enemy.

Fall and fire do go hand in hand, like a Halloween jack-o-lantern.  The warm fiery colors of fall bring warmth to my heart.   However, the cool weather brings an end to all summer fun.  Although, summer will return, because seasons are always ending and beginning.  Just as fires burn out, but are later lit again.

    The Gift of Music

I was blinded by Christmas glitter as I sat, warmed by the fire. The stockings were above me. Our tree stood tall, a golden star at the top, shimmering bright.  My family was frozen in time, hovering around me in a large circle, breathing deeply, staring as if my next move would determine the future. They waited in awe as I opened my final present.  Was it what I was hoping for? Another Christmas glitter was in my eyes.  The silver foil wrapping paper shined like a diamond.  As I ripped off the ribbon a wide grin stretched across my face.  The paper slid to the floor, like a reptile shedding its skin.  I froze and my eyes grew as large as full moons. It was exactly what I was hoping for.

Christmas at my home is a magical time.  My grandparents travel with piles of presents.  Now that my sister is older, it is exciting for her journey home from college too.  Everyone is back by Christmas Eve so we can go to church. Then we have a delicious dinner. When every present is under the tree, we head to bed.

Awaking in the morning is when the real fun begins.  Everybody eats their share of Christmas cookies and reports to the tree.  We sit with hot chocolates as we wait for present time to begin, our drinks steaming, the marshmallows melting into a creamy swirl, our faces warmed.  I am always excited for presents.  Of course, I look forward to crossing items off my Christmas wish list.  Although, I do enjoy watching others open their gifts too.

Kids don’t like to admit it, but there is always a favorite, most memorable, present.  You can tell by the gifts that seem to leap out of the box the minute morning festivities are over.  My mint green, square, iPod nano falls into that category.  It was something I had asked for, but it is always hard to find the latest electronics around Christmas. To me, the iPod was the gift of portable tunes.  For my sister, it was the end of having to share her music.
